Finn Beales is an Instagram darling. He was featured over on the official Instagram Blog this year where his dazzling dodge & burning skills were showcased, a skill set that practically makes him a painter. He dabs on drops of darkness and illuminates his images with the right strokes of light, turning his subjects into idols. His iconography includes the winding road, the blanket of fog, and the most remaining of them all, the lone tree. He’s builds entire scenes out of his photography,  that seem to provide better back story than most Hollywood scripts. He’s one of Instagram’s best storytellers. Period. He belongs to a select crowd of trailblazers, the type of IG’er that is constantly raising the bar for the rest of us. As he’s elevating the standard, he’s generous in helping the rest of us get there, offering editing secrets, and sharing unrevealed treatment recipes (Don’t miss this in the interview). Here’s to Finn, a benevolent gent, and a complete instagram legend.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

First thing in the morning when both kids climb into our bed and we all enjoy a morning cup of tea (or milk) before facing the day. Bliss.

What is your greatest fear?

Losing those I love or checking out before I’m done 

Which living person do you admire the most?

Some of the photographers and journalists that work in combat zones. Bringing pictures and stories out of places that most wouldn’t dream of going takes real courage and dedication to the cause. Many die doing so (as seen in Syria and Libya earlier this year) but without them the reality of a situation can be buried by government propaganda and spin.

What is your greatest extravagance?

What do I spend most money on? Overseas trips for sure but I don’t see that as an extravagance so it’s probably sneakers. I buy way more than necessary.

On what occasion do you lie?

Less and less as I get older.

What do you dislike most about your appearance?

Pretty content with my lot.

Which living person do you most despise?

I don’t despise anyone, but the stories coming out of Syria at the moment upset me deeply; especially those associated with children. I’d say leaders that abuse a position of power rank high on the scale. e.g. Bashar Al-Assad, Robert Mugabe, Vladamir Putin.

What is the quality you most like in a man?

Good morals and a sense of justice.

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

On Instagram? Awesome. Ace. Cool. Sick. Superb.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

My family.

When and where were you the happiest?

Definitely when both my kids were born. I actually delivered our daughter in the bathtub (the midwife arrived 20 mins after the event) so the happiness was preceded by a fair amount of adrenaline!

Which talent would you most like to have?

To play an instrument (guitar or piano) well enough to entertain others.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

My education. I wish I had gone to art school or studied photography at college. I am completely self-taught when it comes to what I do for a living and I think I would have really enjoyed college had I done something I loved. Sometimes you need to follow your heart over your head. If you really love something you’ll work at it because it doesn’t feel like work, and if you work at something you will always succeed.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Getting to where I am today without any formal higher education in either discipline.

What is your most treasured possession?

My late father’s Tag Heur watch.

What do you most value in your friends?

Honesty, loyalty, a sense of humour, the fact they are themselves and without pretence.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

Losing the will to live.

What is your favorite occupation?

A Life Magazine (esp during the glory days of the 40s and 50s) or National Geographic photographer.

What is your most marked characteristic?

I can get bored quite easily and am always on the lookout for the next project/trip/adventure!

Who are your favorite writers?

David Mitchell, Ian McEwan, Andrey Kurkov, Michel Faber and I am rediscovering Roald Dhal with my eldest at bedtime.

What is your favorite film?

Blade Runner ranks very highly. So well realized.

What is your greatest regret?

Regrets usually come about as a result of having not capitalizing on opportunities… so my greatest regret is having not trusted my instincts in the past.

What is your motto?

Use the Force! Learn to follow your instincts. They’re often wiser than your thoughts.
